Charlie Kirk - Call for Resignation of UVU President and Chief of Police

Charlie Kirk - Call for Resignation of UVU President and Chief of Police
The Issue
On September 10, 2025, one of the darkest days for free speech in Utah’s history unfolded at Utah Valley University. Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was tragically assassinated in cold blood while attending an event on campus, an act of senseless political violence that has shaken the nation and state of Utah.
Despite escalating threats and widespread calls for increased security, UVU administration and campus police failed to take the necessary precautions. Petitions were circulated attempting to silence Charlie’s appearance, and serious death threats were reported. Yet, no meaningful steps were taken to ensure his safety.
The assailant gained an unobstructed vantage point from the roof of the Losee Center, from which he carried out the attack. Attendees have reported minimal security measures, including a lack of basic bag checks. UVU Police Chief Jeff Long deployed only six uniformed officers and an undisclosed number of plainclothes officers, insufficient coverage for a high-profile, high-risk event. It is clear that key security considerations, such as overwatch and rooftop surveillance, were entirely overlooked.
Even more disturbing, eyewitnesses have stated they saw the assailant moments before the attack, yet no intervention occurred. This failure to act, combined with the lack of adequate preparation, ultimately allowed a gunman to take a life and escape. As of this writing, the suspect remains at large.
We believe the ultimate responsibility lies with UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez and Police Chief Jeff Long. Their negligence, lack of planning, and disregard for obvious threats directly enabled this horrific outcome.
We call for their immediate resignation.
This is not just about one man. This is about ensuring that political violence, no matter who it targets or political affiliation, is never tolerated in our communities, on our campuses, or in our country. It is about protecting the fundamental rights of all Americans to speak freely, without fear of violence or censorship.
Our hearts go out to Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones. They have not only lost a son, a husband, a father, and a friend, they have lost him to hatred and preventable failure.
We must stand united, regardless of our political beliefs, against violence and in defense of civil discourse. The solution to disagreement is never violence. It is time to say: enough is enough.
We demand accountability. We demand change.
