Change the flag of Charleston, SC as it celebrates 350 years
The Issue
Everyone is experiencing troubles now. I know that a flag won't help our brave healthcare workers, or keep people safe, but it can provide Charleston with a symbol of unity. I hope that as Charleston celebrates 350 years, it can adopt a flag that will last for 350 more years.
I love Charleston, South Carolina - it has consistently been upheld for its beauty and its storied, if sometimes tragic, history. This city is the location of Fort Moultrie, a key Revolutionary battle site, and Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in 1861. In the 18th century, Charleston was the wealthiest city in British North America; tragically, this wealth was brought by slaves. Thousands of Africans were sold, abused, and torn from their families at Gadsden Wharf.
The current flag of Charleston is what's called a "Seal on a Bedsheet" - the city's "Carolopolis" seal on a blue field. This is the least creative and least recognizable kind of flag, indicating that very little thought was put into its design.
For the Sesquarcentennial Celebration, I believe we should adopt my design. Its cross reflect's Charleston's moniker - the Holy City. The crescent mirrors the Moultrie Flag of the Revolutionary War, and the three horizontal bars represent the blood, the fire, and the wealth in our history.
I need support before I bring this to the city council. I believe that in this troubling time of sickness, a beautiful flag might help bring the people of Charleston together. Maybe a unified symbol could give the people of Charleston a shred of hope - and I think even a shred of hope would do a world of good.
