Let the Seniors of Charles Herbert Flowers High School Wear Black

Let the Seniors of Charles Herbert Flowers High School Wear Black
The Issue
At Charles Herbert Flowers, the supposed Mecca of Excellence, over 2,500 students wear uniform everyday. We have abided peacefully for three years wearing white and green, the agreed upon uniform policy for grades 9 through 11, and coming upon senior year, we were excited to wear black. Four senior classes before us have worn black, and it was our turn to tote the black flag and wear it proudly. Science and Technology students especially, for we were looking forward to wearing our patch with our black shirts.
As students, we deserve to have the chance to choose what we want to wear. We shouldn’t have to follow the decisions of those who they don’t affect. We should be the ones making the decisions as to what we wear. The shirts they expect us to buy are $30+, which some families can’t afford to buy. It is unnecessarily expensive and families with multiple children in the 2020 graduating class may be struggling to find the finances to buy each of their students 3 or more shirts. After waiting 3 years, we deserve the color we want. This should be our decision to make. At the end of the day they aren’t the ones wearing it or buying it for us.
By allowing different grade levels to wear different uniform colors, teachers, security, and admin will be assisted in identifying students by grade level. Allowing seniors to wear black will be for everyone’s benefit, not just for us.
