I am a tiny female who is more scared of men than a coyote. Recently, my fears were amplified when I learned about the case involving James Pulliam, a 25-year-old man who strangled and beat a coyote to death in May 2025. The coyote, weighing only 40 pounds, was exhibiting normal defensive behavior and posed no significant threat to a healthy adult man. This act of violence is not only unnecessary and cruel but raises concerns about the potential danger James Pulliam could present to humans.

The coyote was suffering and dying from rabies, but she deserved a peaceful passing from a veterinarian, not a violent death. She should have been brought to an open admission animal shelter for humane euthanasia.

I believe that animal cruelty is a serious issue that cannot be overlooked. In this case, the coyote suffered for 20 excruciating minutes before succumbing to their injuries. Such intentional, prolonged harm to an animal indicates a disturbing lack of empathy that should not be ignored by our legal system.  It is even more disturbing that people are hailing this man a hero.

I am urging the authorities in the area to take immediate action to charge James Pulliam with animal cruelty. By holding him accountable, we can send a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated and highlight the need for humane treatment of wildlife. It is crucial that our justice system recognizes the severity of this act, despite any statute of limitations, which should not deter justice.

Additionally, I propose that James Pulliam be mandated to attend educational sessions on coyote coexistence. Education plays a vital role in promoting understanding and reducing conflicts between humans and wildlife. Such programs aim to teach individuals how to live harmoniously with coyotes, understanding their behavior and respect for their ecological importance.
