Charge and Punish Era FM DJs Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin, and Radin Amir Effendi.
The Issue
In a video shared on Era FM radio station’s social media platforms, one of its announcers, Azad popularly called Pak Azad was seen mimicking a ritual performed during a Hindu religious festival (Thaipusam). His colleagues can be heard shouting “Vel, Vel!” and laughing hysterically at Azad’s inappropriate act.
The video has caused discomfort, particularly amongst the Hindu community and Malaysians in general. The said inappropriate act is deeply offensive, extremely disrespectful to the Hindu community. The video is an insult to the faith and traditions of Hindus in Malaysia apart from being insensitive and racist.
Religious practices are sacred and should never be used as a source of entertainment or humor. This is concerning, given that Malaysians have long thrived in a multicultural society where mutual respect should be instinctive. This inappropriate act is against the first ‘Rukun Negara’ “Believe in God’. We must always respect the religious and cultural sensitivities in Malaysia. The Thaipusam ritual carries deep significance for the Hindu community. Any form of mockery or disrespect toward it or any religious practice, for that matter is entirely unacceptable.
Therefore, this matter cannot be taken lightly by the government and/or the authorities. We do not want this issue to subside as time goes by. A mere apology, temporary relief of duty, investigation alone is not sufficient.
We urge the Malaysian government to take immediate and severe action against those involved on the matter. Action should not only be taken against some individuals but also against the radio station’s management. A stern action against any inappropriate act that belittle or disrespect religious and cultural sensitivities is needed to ensure that the law serves as both a deterrent and a tool for justice. It is essential to understand, respect, and embrace the religious practices of different faiths for the betterment of the nation.
Hence, we urge the government/authorities to charge and punish those who involved, under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act. We do not want them to get away with a mere apology, temporary relief of duty, and investigation. Boundaries on what is acceptable in a respectful, multicultural society need to be set. We must not overlook these incidents or allow them to become normalized.
NO MAN IS ABOVE THE LAW!
