Black Lives Matter: Demand Chapman University Financial Support

The Issue

Chapman University is a private, academically distinguished university located in Orange, California. While Chapman regularly espouses its emphasis on diversity, cultural awareness, and support for students of color, the school also has a long running history of neglecting these individuals when they need it most. A short walk through campus will feature signs that showcase Black and Brown students as integral members of the student body. Student-led tours will also praise campus resources like The Cross Cultural Center or Chapman's Black Student Union as means of uplifting marginalized voices. Yet, when acts of racism take place on campus or in the greater community, Chapman leadership is often silent. Indeed, Chapman's Black and Brown students are often utilized as a marketing tool to bolster image and appeal to financial stakeholders.

On June 1st, 2020, Chapman University's president, Daniele C. Struppa, released a statement entitled: "Chapman to Host ‘Turning Anguish to Purpose: The Path Forward’ Discussion in Response to George Floyd Death". This online session is geared toward cultivating dialogue about racial injustices so rife in the nation. While this is a necessary step, THIS ACT ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH.

The average cost to attend Chapman University as an undergraduate during the 2019-2020 academic year was $54,540 (not considering potential room/board costs or assistance from financial aid). Chapman received tuition from approximately 10,001 students in 2019 Fall enrollment, which includes 7,656 undergraduates and 2,345 graduates. As an esteemed private university, Chapman has more than enough resources to MONETARILY back the Black Lives Matter Movement and other key organizations/campaigns actively fighting to end white supremacy. Engaged allyship from major businesses such as Chapman University requires dialogue AND economic advocacy.

Chapman students, Chapman Alumni, and concerned citizens: Your voices are needed. Please sign and share this petition, urging Chapman to take an anti-racist stance through funding. Thank you.
