Changing the Lobster Industry in the Gulf of Maine

The Issue

We, the undersigned, express our deep concern about the environmental impact of materials used in the lobster industry. Non-biodegradable materials in lobster traps, lines, and other equipment are causing significant harm to marine ecosystems. We urgently request measures to transition to sustainable materials and to monitor their use effectively.

Firstly, we advocate for the mandatory use of biodegradable materials in lobster traps to reduce plastic pollution and minimize ghost fishing. Additionally, we urge the use of eco-friendly, biodegradable fishing lines to prevent entanglement of marine wildlife and reduce plastic debris in the ocean.

To ensure compliance, we recommend establishing a system for tracking and reporting the materials used in the lobster industry. This includes mandatory reporting by fishers on the types and quantities of materials used and regular inspections. Providing training and resources to fishers will facilitate the transition to sustainable practices.

Supporting fishers financially is crucial. Offering subsidies and grants will help cover the costs associated with adopting sustainable materials. Investment in research and development of innovative materials, in collaboration with academic institutions and environmental organizations, will drive progress in the industry.

Public awareness and education are vital. Launching educational campaigns to inform the industry and consumers about the importance of sustainable materials will foster a culture of environmental responsibility. Engaging with stakeholders, including fishers, environmental groups, and the public, will help gather input and build support for these initiatives.

By taking these actions, we can protect marine ecosystems, ensure the sustainability of the lobster industry, and support the livelihoods of those who depend on it. We urge immediate action to implement these changes and set a precedent for sustainable practices in the seafood industry.

This matters to me because I would like to eat food and drink water without microplastics in it, I would also like to help save our planet and we start by saving our oceans.
