Changing the hair policy at Ballarat High School

The issue

Currently, at Ballarat High School the uniform policy does not allow any sort of tint or extreme hair colour. This petition is fighting for that rule to be changed in order to improve self-expression, individuality and comfort within the school's community.

The school's procedure for dealing with violations of this rule is to send students home and also leads to expulsion from school. This is firstly, a rule that inhibits their learning more so than the dye in the first place. But secondly, this procedure pushes a lot of stress onto these students, who just want to be at school to learn. The enforcing of the rule is also not consistent and unfair as other rules regarding jewellery, make up and nail polish are completely ignored when it comes to enforcing.

This rule has been implemented for over 20 years, and in our changing, modern society, old fashioned rules like these are outdated and do not reflect the views of majority of the cohort and society. This rule represents the old stereotype that hair dye and colour is inherently a bad thing and makes a student look unpresentable.

Please, if you support the update of this rule, take the time to sign this petition in order to encourage a more supportive and nurturing learning environment at Ballarat High School. As the school council is responsible for uniform policy, we hope to show them through this petition that many people support the idea of a rule change.
