Changing Street Names in Freedom Park

Changing Street Names in Freedom Park
The Issue
Street names of Freedom Park do not reflect the history of Freedom Park . It is high time the legacy of Freedom Park be told after 28 years of existence from informal settlement to a developing township. The street names should reflect history of Freedom Park where major players towards successful development of this historical township should be featured on the street names,as a token of appreciation of the role they played thus far.
Today we are proud of this beautiful township despite challenges we face such as crime , service delivery, drug abuse and many more. As Freedom Park Founders Forum we believe that every place where people stay has a history and a legacy hence we created this petition to the residents of Freedom Park/Devland to sign and endorse the call for all street names to be changed and be named after selfless activists and individuals who were actively involved in the shaping of Freedom Park,St Martin, Devland Ext 27 ,Siyaya ,Mahala Park , Waterfront aka Zimbabwe and other sections.
Freedom Park also known as Devland was first established in 1993 by community members who were mostly tenants and backyard dwellers coming from various parts of Soweto and surrounding areas in the south of Gauteng. However that establishment was destroyed by the government and that was in a period towards the world renowned 1994 South Africa's first democratic elections .
In the beginning of January 1994 people regrouped from the destroyed community members all around Soweto and met at Selelekele Secondary School in Orlando to resolve in going back to occupy Freedom Park in February 1994 .
The were various legal battles between the settled community of Freedom Park, the government and the private land owners of the land however after such battles the land was agreed to be developed in the year 1999.
Starting with the first primary school in Freedom Park which was an initiative championed by former president and first black president Nelson Mandela. In the year 2002 the construction of the school was finished however for some political infighting and the community fighting for houses and proper development of services ,the school has to slightly delay the opening for learning.
In the year 2003 the community of Freedom Park was protesting against the City of Johannesburg for the slow pace of development in Freedom Park and it was after that the area was developed with houses ,roads , electricity and other services.
Freedom Park has two wards in within the City of Johannesburg seperated only by one road in between to form ward 24 and 119 . The area is now 28 years old in existence and hosts huge talents and various activities including visible political activism which is mixed with sports and programs from various institutions and organisations.
