Changing Harlan High School Dress Code
The Issue
*DO NOT DONATE $$$ PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE* instagram:harlanhighdresscode I am petitioning for a new and revised version of the Harlan High School dress code to include shorts ( no shorter than 6’), dyed hair of any color and tank tops. Starting school again after COVID has put a mental strain on all of us, including our parents. We should not be stressed over what we can and cannot wear.
High school should be a time for us to flourish and fully express ourselves before we go into the real world! Not only is our current dress code unreasonable and unnecessary, is it sexist! Women are especially targeted with the current restrictions on what we are able to wear. For example shorts and tank tops are not allowed which is ridiculous since we are in Texas! I am not purposing that we all wear short shorts and and spaghetti straps but instead have some leeway on what we can wear. It is also unfair schools like Taft High School can wear them while we cannot. With the summer heat, only wearing the clothes currently permitted is highly inconvenient. Shopping for dress code appropriate clothing is also majorly inconvenient when most affordable attire marketed to women are tank tops, skirts and dresses shorter than an ID card, and shorts.
We are seen as distractions for showing our midriff, and if you’re a women, our chest! We shouldn’t have to dress according to the dress code to avoid the disruption of others. Personally I have never been disrupted by some else’s chest or stomach like how the peers (both men and women) I’ve talked to haven’t either. So if the students aren’t disrupted then would be the teachers sexualizing us? If that is the case then it would be best for them to pursue a career without children. Neon blue hair and shoulders will not stop me from raising my hand and enjoying school.
We are comfortable with our bodies so why can’t the school be? The goal isn’t to completely abolish the dress code but to revise it and make it more comfortable for everyone. Which is at the least, shorts. When we are comfortable in our clothes, that is when we will be able to learn our best.
While Dressing for Success, The Following Items Should Not Be Allowed:
- Shorts more than 6” above knee
- Dresses more than 6” above knee
- Skirts more than 6” above the knee
- Strapless tops (unless covered up) ex. tube tops
- Spandex shorts/pants
- See through clothing
- Clothing and jewelry with profane language, vulgar drawings, promotion of tobacco, alcohol beverages, drugs, suicidal or inappropriate messages
- House Shoes
- Pajamas
- More than 2” of exposed midriff
When Dressing for Success, The Following Items ALLOWED Are:
- Shorts no more than 6” above the knee
- Skirts no more than 6” above the knee
- Dresses no more than 6” above the knee
- Tank Tops
- Non low cut tops
