Change unfair clause in Tenancies Amendment Act 2019
Change unfair clause in Tenancies Amendment Act 2019
The issue
Calling all landlords & the public to please sign this petition in challenging the Act to be review for a fairer outcome in the event of damage made by tenants (regardless if it's accidental or careless).
Current act: If damage is caused by accident, tenants don’t need to pay for any of the cost nor insurance excess for the repair.
The Act itself does not promote the level of care & responsibilities tenants should take but rather creates an illusion to tenants that they do not need to be careful in anyway, because they know their landlord will end up paying for the loss they caused, and tenants is not required to pay a cent. (exclude general wear & tear)
This clause is wrong and unfair. We don’t get to see this in any of the insurance we purchased in NZ - you caused the damage, you pay for your own excess, insurance company is not going to pay for you. And I believe there shouldn't be any exemption in the rental situation.
