Change UK law on fatal dog-on-dog attacks

Change UK law on fatal dog-on-dog attacks
The Issue
My Jack Russell, Dylan, celebrated his 15th Birthday on 24th March. Just two weeks later, on 7th April, he was fatally attacked by an unleashed dog while on my property. The breed of this dog has yet to be determined, and the ‘owner’, who came to my home with the unleashed dog, watched as it inflicted a fatal attack on Dylan. I am still adjusting to life without my parents, who both passed away recently. Dylan was my last connection to them, especially my mum, as we had collected Dylan together. He was not just a pet; he was family and a living memory of my parents. He was also my emotional support dog.
The tragic loss of a pet due to an aggressive dog is a heartbreaking event that is happening far too often in the UK, and there is currently no law to hold the owner of the attacking dog accountable when the victim is another dog. The UK law does not recognise fatal dog-on-dog attacks as an offence, meaning there is no legal recourse or justice for owners like me who have lost a beloved dog in such gruesome circumstances. This is especially tragic as I witnessed it but due to my disabilities could do nothing to intervene.
Statistics from various animal welfare organisations indicate that fatal dog-on-dog attacks are rising across the UK. This growing concern needs to be addressed promptly to prevent further tragedies. The absence of strict legal consequences allows irresponsible dog owners to neglect their duty of care to the public and other animals.
I ask that UK law be amended to classify fatal dog-on-dog attacks as a punishable offence. This change would compel dog owners to act more responsibly and lead to immediate consequences for those who fail to control their pets. The aim is for this law to cover compensation for the affected parties and enforced deterrents such as fines, mandatory training for dogs and owners, or even restrictions on dog ownership for repeat offenders.
By signing this petition, you will be advocating for safer environments for pets, supporting bereaved pet owners, and urging lawmakers to take necessary action to prevent these attacks.
Let us stand together to remember Dylan and the many other pets who have faced similar fates. Let's push for legal change that ensures justice and safety for all dogs in the UK.
Please join me in signing this petition to make a difference. Together, we can bring about change.
