Dear Turkey Trot Organizers,

We are writing to you today to request that you change the name of your event from Turkey Trot to Thanksgiving Trot. While we understand that the name may have been chosen with good intentions, it is important to recognize the harm and insensitivity it can cause.

The term "turkey" has long been associated with Thanksgiving, but it also carries a difficult connotation for many vegetarian, vegan, plant-based, and other animal-kindness communities. Turkeys became associated with Thanksgiving dinner in the mid-19th century, but over 150 years later, they're no longer as prevalent among the many families that celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. Over 10% of United States residents do not include meat as part of their diet, and that number is steadily increasing. It is important that we take steps towards creating an inclusive environment where all members of our community feel valued and respected.

By changing the name of your event to Thanksgiving Trot, you will be taking an important step towards promoting cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. This small change can have a big impact on how members of our community perceive your organization and its values, as well as usher in a new way for people to participate freely in this beloved national tradition centered around family and gratitude. 

We urge you to consider making this change as soon as possible. Thank you for taking the time to read our petition.
