Change the world for disabled children
Change the world for disabled children
The Issue
Raising a child with disabilities is a journey filled with both profound joy and relentless challenges. For countless families like mine, the system is failing our children with complex needs at every turn. From education to social care and healthcare, these essential services are lacking, leaving us exhausted and worn down from constantly battling for the support our children deserve.
Our education system is not adequately equipped to handle or understand the unique needs of disabled children. Teachers often lack the necessary training, resources, and support to provide an enriching learning environment for these students. According to a 2022 report by the Special Education Consortium, over 20% of children with disabilities do not receive the curriculum adaptations or support they require to succeed. This is not just a statistic, but a grim reality for our children who are being denied a fair chance at a quality education.
Social care is another battlefield, where access to the necessary resources and support services is hindered by long waiting lists, bureaucratic hurdles, and underfunding. A recent survey by the Carers' National Association revealed that more than half of the families do not receive the social care support they need, often causing financial and emotional strain. Families are forced into a never-ending cycle of advocating and pleading for services that should be readily available.
Healthcare services are overcrowded, under-resourced, and often fail to provide continuity of care for children with complex healthcare needs. Parents are left to become makeshift healthcare providers, navigating complex medical regimens with minimal guidance. This is not only unsustainable but reinforces a system where children's needs are sidelined.
We are at a critical juncture where the voices of parents and caregivers must be heard. We need comprehensive reforms to create an inclusive, supportive, and efficient system for children with disabilities. This includes increasing funding to train educators, streamline social care services, and enhance healthcare provision specific to the needs of disabled children.
I urge policymakers, educators, and healthcare providers to take immediate action. Let’s work together to ensure that no child with disabilities is left behind. Join me in advocating for this crucial change by signing this petition. Every signature will bring us one step closer to a better world for our children.
