I attend Byron P. Steele High School where they want us to strive for academic excellence, but they disregard our mental health. In the first few months of going to Steele there have been two suicides that have been swept under the rug. The only way the students found out was through parents making Facebook posts. If it wasn't for them, I would not have had a clue about these events. The faculty never said a thing about the kids we unfortunately lost due to their battle with poor mental health. We never had an assembly. We never had a visit from the counselors. We had nothing. I understand that some parents may not want the news about their loss to be publicized, but this year has brought so many struggles and low moments for many of the students that attend Steele. Yet no one has taken the right amount of time to check in on them.

Personally I have been a target to verbal harassment. When I went to the faculty for help on how to handle my problem, it took them nearly a week to respond back to me. I've dealt with my fair share of racism outside of school, but when it happened in the place I'm trying to get an education, it left me feeling depressed for days on end. Eventually when I was able to speak to a faculty member about it, they told me there was nothing they could do. They said they could have a conversation about "respect" with the students involved, but other than that it was out of their control. This was just one of many occasions where I have tried to seek help over something that was greatly affecting me and either did not receive help, or by the time I did, it was too late to do anything. From my knowledge Steele has a history of neglecting their students' wellbeing. From not responding fast enough to help a kid in need, to letting sexual assault victims’ abusers roam the halls freely with no consequences, even after the victims have told the faculty what they have done. I believe that shining a light on how my school deals with mental health issues and the problems causing poor mental health will really allow us to have a conversation regarding these topics. Hopefully, with enough signatures I'll be able to show my principal and convince her to take the first steps towards getting my classmates the help they need and deserve. Starting with a faster response time from our counselors when students address their needs, listening to those who come forward with accounts of harassment and assault and making sure that there are punishments for the abusers, and lastly having suicide and mental health be a part of everyday conversations.
