Change the term 'homeless' to 'homebless' in Rochester

The Issue

As a resident of Rochester, New York, I’ve witnessed countless individuals facing the struggles of not having a permanent residence. It breaks my heart to see these individuals, not just because of their circumstance but because of the labels we assign them. Calling someone 'homeless' may describe their situation, but it also inadvertently perpetuates a stigma—one that suggests their value is diminished because of their lack of a home. I believe that people should not have to feel less than others due to life circumstances. Instead, language should inspire hope and dignity.

This is why I am calling for Rochester to lead by example and change the narrative. Let’s replace the term 'homeless' with 'homebless.' By adjusting our language, we can alter perceptions and foster a more inclusive and compassionate community. The word 'homebless' acknowledges their situation but also conveys a sense of blessing—suggesting that change is possible, and that every individual deserves respect, care, and the possibility of a new beginning.

Across various cities, similar changes in terminology have shown positive outcomes, redefining public perception and encouraging initiatives aimed at providing support and solutions rather than stigma. Seattle, for instance, has seen an increase in community support after its campaigns reframed the narrative around homelessness.

Ensuring every individual feels valued is the first step in creating effective support systems. This language change, though seemingly minor, can set the stage for broader societal shifts in understanding and empathy.

Join me in urging city officials, local organizations, and community leaders in Rochester to adopt 'homebless' as the official terminology. Let’s be pioneers of kindness and demonstrate that our words can change the world.

Sign this petition and help make Rochester a beacon of hope and transformation for all our neighbors.
