The Issue

The true handicaps are the ones we impose on ourselves. As someone deeply affected by the terminology used in relation to accessibility, I have seen firsthand how language shapes perceptions and attitudes. The term 'Handicap Accessible' often carries with it outdated connotations that subtly reinforce the idea of limitation rather than empowerment. In contrast, a term like 'Physically Friendly' promotes inclusivity and reflects a progressive attitude towards accessibility.

Language has the power to influence how society views individuals with disabilities. By changing the terminology from 'Handicap Accessible' to 'Physically Friendly,' we can help shift societal perceptions, emphasizing ability and inclusion over limitation. This simple change in wording can lead to a broader cultural shift, fostering environments where everyone feels welcomed and respected.

Many forward-thinking communities and institutions are already moving in this direction, acknowledging that words matter. The Center for Disability Rights, for example, advocates for person-first language, which places the individual before the disability. This is a fundamental shift in the right direction, highlighting dignity, respect, and inclusion.

Statistics show that approximately 26% of adults in the United States live with some form of disability. As the population ages, that number is expected to increase. Adopting more inclusive language now is imperative, not only to accommodate the current needs but to anticipate future demands.

Our society thrives on diversity and inclusion; it's time our language does too. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for a more inclusive and compassionate dialogue that recognizes the power of words and their ability to shape our realities. Let's move forward together to make the world more understanding and accepting for everyone, regardless of physical ability.

Please sign this petition to urge policymakers, businesses, and communities to adopt the term 'Physically Friendly' and support a future where everyone is embraced and no one is limited by outdated language.
