Change the Springville High School mascot to inspire great ideals!
The Issue
Springville is a wonderful community with many great individuals. Springville High School currently has and has had many honorable students attend, graduate and become alumni. The Springville High School Red Devil mascot has been in place for about 100 years and is named after the Red Devil Concrete Company that was in the area 100 years ago. Right now, is a great time to consider changes as there is a new high school being built. We need change to celebrate the good this community has to offer right now and in the future. There is no longer a Red Devil Concrete Company that exists in Springville. Today most people don't associate the Red Devil mascot with the Red Devil Concrete Company. Is a Red Devil the best option for a high school mascot? We can be open to change for the best. We can change things for future generations. When you honestly look at what a Devil represents, as well as problems we face in our world such as evil, violence, wars, selfishness, greed, and dishonesty, do we want our high school mascot to appear to represent evil? The definition of a devil on a google search: "A devil is the personification of evil... a symbol of human evil." In an environment where students should be striving for excellence, a devil isn't an inspiring symbol to rally comradery, peacemakers, intelligence, goodness, moral strength, courage, honesty, etc. Why would we want a mascot to be one that is a personification of evil? The devil is the ultimate loser. We need a great school mascot that will inspire victory.
A great school mascot should inspire strength for good not evil. One great option is Springville Ospreys.
The Osprey is an awesome bird that is a master of wind and wave. It has powerful wings that span 5-6 feet. There are Ospreys near Utah Lake. "The Osprey is a member of the hawk family. The Bird is fast, powerful, and flawless in flight. Even when the sun is bright and blinding, the Osprey sees its way clear to reaching its destination, never flinching in its certainty that it’s heading in the right direction. The Osprey’s symbolism and meaning include goal-orientation, having blind faith in one's ability to achieve greatness, clear vision, intuition and the ability to swiftly rise above any challenges or obstacles, insight, discernment, focus, and victory. The osprey's/hawk's cultural significance endures as a powerful symbol of strength, grace, and connection to the divine. Its soaring flight and sharp vision have inspired countless tales of prophecy, wisdom, and spiritual guidance." (Symbolism of Osprey - Google Search)
There are also many other great options that could inspire good for students and the community they are in.
Springville Rams. The big horned sheep are found in the mountains of Springville. "A Ram symbolizes determination, power, and leadership... Also, the power to penetrate, overcome, and achieve. It reflects the assertion of strength in creative ways to achieve a breakthrough. It is also associated with sacrifice." (Symbolism of Rams - Google Search)
Springville Stallions. "Stallions, as well as horses in general, have many symbolic meanings across cultures and historical periods... Horses are known for their strength and vitality... Horses can represent speed, freedom, hope, and change… Horses can be a symbol of power, motivation, and spiritual transcendence... as well as courage, independence and wisdom." (what do stallions symbolize - Google Search)
Springville Patriots. "A Patriot is a person who loves their country and is ready to boldly support and defend it... Patriotism is found in actual service to fellow citizens, in volunteerism, in caring for your neighbor. Patriots have values like justice, fairness and freedom... Defending the powerless. Opening our arms to those who flee persecution and poverty. Liberty and justice for all, everyone, no one left out." (Symbolism for Patriot - Google Search)
Springville Bulls or Toros. “The bull/toro has been a symbol of strength, power, and inner resilience, the ability to stand firm in the face of adversity, and new beginnings.” (bull symbolism - Google Search)
Springville Warriors. "Warrior symbolism can have many meanings, including strength, resilience, and courage. It can also represent a person's commitment to growing their soul and heart, or their role in caring for others.” “Warriors put themselves on the line for the people they serve. A warrior is completely focused, disciplined, and aggressive not out of selfishness, but on behalf of others.” (warriors symbolism - Google Search)
We need the great students, parents and citizens of the community to be open to change and promote change for good in the Springville High School mascot. With a new Springville High School being built, now is the time for a change! Please sign this petition, confirm your signature in your email and pass it along to get more support!
