Living in New Smyrna Beach has been a wonderful experience for my family and me, especially with its beautiful beaches and vibrant community. However, there is one pressing issue that disrupts the tranquility of our coastal paradise: the inconsistent and dangerous speed limits on A1A after crossing the South Causeway onto our charming island.

Presently, the speed limit changes four times on this stretch, creating confusion and potential safety hazards for both drivers and pedestrians. With multiple crosswalks meant for pedestrians, it's shocking to witness large trucks and commercial vehicles barreling down the road at excessive speeds, often exceeding 50 mph. This not only endangers local residents but also jeopardizes the safety of tourists who come to enjoy a peaceful beach day with their families. There was a recent incidents where a pedestrian was struck at excess speed.

Elsewhere in Florida, A1A consistently maintains a 35 mph speed limit, a standard that promotes safety and cohesion. There's no valid reason why our section of A1A should be any different. Aligning the speed limit with other parts of the state would provide clarity and enhance pedestrian safety.

By standardizing A1A’s speed limit to 35 mph immediately upon entering the island, we can mitigate risks, foster a secure environment for beach-goers, and preserve the family-friendly nature of New Smyrna Beach. This simple change could prevent future accidents and allow everyone to enjoy our beautiful community without fear.

I urge the local authorities and traffic management to consider this adjustment. It’s a small but significant change that can make a world of difference. For the safety of our children, our visitors, and our neighbors, help us bring about this essential reform.
