Change the School Week in Sparta, TN to 4 Days

The Issue

Living in Sparta, Tennessee, I've seen firsthand how a five-day school week can be incredibly stressful for both students and teachers. Our children come home every day exhausted, overwhelmed with homework, and with little or no time to just be kids. As caring parents and community members, we want our children to have the best educational experience, but not at the cost of their happiness and mental health.

Research shows that a four-day school week can significantly reduce stress levels among students and improve their overall well-being. According to the National Education Policy Center, schools that have adopted a four-day week have reported increased student attendance and engagement, as well as a decrease in behavioral issues. Not only does this approach help students thrive, but it also provides teachers with an additional day to prepare lesson plans, engage in professional development, and take care of their personal needs, ultimately leading to higher quality teaching.

The financial benefits of transitioning to a four-day school week should not be overlooked. School districts that have made the switch report savings on transportation costs, utilities, and other operational expenses – funds that could be redirected to improving resources and facilities that directly enhance student learning.

Adjusting our school week to four days will allow our children more time to rest and engage in family activities and extracurricular pursuits. It's a step towards ensuring they don't just survive school but truly blossom into their full potential.

I urge the White County School Board to consider the well-being of our students and teachers by implementing a four-day school week. Please join me in supporting this change by signing this petition. Let's create a healthier, more balanced environment for our children and community!
