The Issue

In 2025, the world feels more uncertain and fraught with risks than ever before. As a parent living in Buffalo, NY, the fear of school shootings is a constant concern. Our children should be equipped to contact authorities if ever caught in such a horrendous situation.

Currently, schools across Buffalo enforce a strict 'no phones in classrooms' rule. While the intentions to ensure students are not distracted during lessons are clear, this policy unintentionally leaves them vulnerable in emergencies. We must find a balance between maintaining a focused learning environment and ensuring the safety of our children.

To address these concerns, I propose a revised policy that allows students to keep their phones on silent or in do-not-disturb mode while in class. In case of an emergency, students should be permitted to access their phones. Additionally, implementing educational programs on the responsible and safe use of mobile devices during school hours will help mitigate misuse.

It's crucial to adapt to the times and circumstances we live in. The safety of our children should always be a priority, and providing them with the tools to seek help in times of crisis is an essential step. Let's work together to make a change that ensures their safety without compromising their education.

I urge the Buffalo School District and local education policymakers to consider this proposal seriously. Please join me in signing this petition to advocate for a safer learning environment for our children.
