Change the route of Deseret News Marathon
Change the route of Deseret News Marathon
The Issue
The University of Utah is a Trauma 1 designated hospital, crucial for the immediate medical needs of critically ill patients with time-sensitive conditions. Its importance to the community cannot be overstated. However, during the annual Deseret News Marathon, the access route to this life-saving institution becomes severely restricted, posing significant challenges for hospital staff, particularly physicians, who need to reach the hospital promptly.
With the current marathon route, the crucial turn onto Mario Capecchi Drive is blocked off completely. This closure means there are zero exceptions available for hospital staff, delaying critical medical services and potentially putting patient lives at risk. In emergency situations, every minute counts, and this obstruction poses a serious threat to effective healthcare delivery.
While we all support community events like the marathon and understand their importance in bringing people together and promoting health and fitness, it is paramount that they do not interfere with essential services like those provided by the hospital. We believe there is a viable solution that balances the excitement of the marathon with the critical need for unobstructed hospital access.
We propose a reevaluation of the marathon route, aiming to minimize its impact on the University of Utah Hospital. The marathon organizers should work with hospital administrators to develop an alternative route that preserves the marathon experience while ensuring a clear path for emergency vehicles and hospital staff. This change is not only possible but necessary to maintain the safety and health of our community.
Every signature on this petition is a step towards ensuring that lives are not endangered by logistical challenges during important events. Join us in urging the marathon organizers and city officials to prioritize healthcare access by adjusting the marathon route and ensuring the safety of all involved.
Sign this petition to support a balance between celebrating community spirit and safeguarding critical health services at the University of Utah Hospital.
