Change the narrative around the NDIS

The issue

For too long, the conversation around the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has focused on budgets, fraud, and headlines that fail to reflect the reality of the people who rely on it every single day. This focus on finances and suspicion overshadow the true purpose of the NDIS - to support those with disabilities in leading fulfilling, dignified lives.

The NDIS was created to empower Australians living with disability, to provide dignity, independence, inclusion, and opportunity. Yet the public narrative has shifted toward negativity, causing participants, families, and support workers to feel unheard, judged, and undervalued.

We acknowledge that accountability and reform are important. Every system should be transparent and sustainable. But the actions of a minority should never define an entire community.

Behind every NDIS plan is a human being:

  • A young person learning life skills.
  • A parent finally receiving respite.
  • Someone accessing therapy that changes their future.
  • A participant gaining employment, independence, and confidence.
  • Support workers and providers dedicating their lives to improving outcomes for others.

We are calling on government leaders, media outlets, service providers, and the wider Australian community to shift the conversation from fear to understanding. Highlight positive participant outcomes and success stories. Consult directly with people living with disability before implementing major changes. Support ethical providers instead of painting the entire sector with the same brush and recognise the essential role support workers, carers, and advocates play every day.

This petition aims to create a change in the way we talk about the NDIS, urging policymakers, media professionals, and the public to recognize its true value and potential. A positive narrative will not only help dismantle stigmas but also ensure continued support and improvement of the scheme.

Australia should be leading conversations around inclusion, accessibility, and human dignity, not creating division or fear around disability support.

It’s time to change the narrative.

Sign this petition if you believe people living with disability deserve to be seen, heard, respected, and supported.
