A Little About Me:
Hello! Shalom! Hola! Kuira-bá! Pialli! My name is Roman S. Cohen. I was born and raised in Klamath county, Oregon on Klamath & Modoc Lands. I am Jewish/Hebrew through my Father, and Mexican/Mexicano (Rarámuri, Nahua, Afrodescendiente, and Castellano) through my Mother. I attended both Chiloquin Elementary School and Chiloquin Jr./Sr. High School and I graduated with honors.
What is this Petition About?
I have lived and been a member of the Sprague River community for twenty-three years now. Throughout my upbringing I have learned from many people and have known many people in this community. This is the place I call home as many do. This petition/name change is in honor of Ms. Cleo Atchley, (Modoc, Karuk, and Irish on her Mother's side and Paiute on her Father's side). To many, a community member, a friend, a relative, an elder. Her legacy lives in this town. From the original derogatory name of 'Squaw' Flats Road to the new name she advocated for, Bliss Road. May her legacy continue by changing the name of 'Squaw' Flat's store, a name change she was advocating for before passing away from COVID-19.
It's time this community changes the name of the store. Let's make this a place for community to grow and be inspired. Let's make this a place safe for our/the young ones. It's time to learn and make a change.
Where/When will this Petition be brought up?
To the Store Owner at the Store in Spring of 2024.
(Need signatures as “proof” that the name should be changed and is in favor by the community, before addressing owner.)
Why the name change?
'Squaw' refers to an ethnic and sexual slur against Native/Indigenous women in North America. Since the 1970s it has been associated with derogatory slang for a women's lower genitalia.
It's time to move past racist, divisive, un-inclusive, derogatory terms.
Let us all stand in solidarity together and refrain from the usage of such a word. No more derogatory terms as places against ANY communities.
