This has to change.
Let's align the age of consent with the age at which individuals are considered adults in other aspects of law. In most places, an 18-year-old legally gains the right to make critical life decisions, including voting, signing contracts, and others. The age of consent should reflect this threshold of maturity and decision-making capacity.
Moreover, the adolescent years are crucial for brain development. The frontal lobe, responsible for critical thinking and reasoning, continues to develop well into a person's twenties. Allowing children to consent to important life-changing decisions before their brains are fully developed is irresponsible and can lead to regrettable circumstances. Raising the age of consent can aid in reducing instances of coercion and exploitation by creating a clearer boundary between a child and an adult.
Countries and states that have successfully increased the age of consent to 18 have seen a decrease in cases of exploitation and abuse, supporting the fact that such a change not only protects children but promotes healthier adolescent development.
