Change the law to protect pets from dangerous dogs
Change the law to protect pets from dangerous dogs
The Issue
My Cat Sandy was savagely attacked by a dog dangerously out of control and suffered immensely. She had a nerve and tendon severed in her leg, she had a collapsed lung and liver damage. Sandy bore 6-inch puncture wounds and other severe injuries all over her innocent body. Despite the horror she went through, I was shocked when I discovered the police couldn’t intervene, and the law doesn’t actually protect dogs and cats but only people and service dogs. This means your beloved pet could suffer serious harm or even be killed, and the law would not bring justice.
This injustice needs to change. The current legislation fails to hold the owners of dangerous dogs accountable when their pets cause harm to non-service animals like dogs and cats. Such a glaring oversight in the law allows irresponsible owners to escape liability while our pets continue to face potential danger.
Pets are often regarded as family members, and it's horrifying to think they aren't adequately protected under existing laws. Many families have faced the devastation of seeing their pets attacked—or worse—and have found themselves without recourse. It’s time for us to vocalize this critical gap in the law and ensure pets, beloved family members in so many households, are given the protection they deserve.
We are advocating for a more inclusive and just Dangerous Dogs Act that encompasses the protection of non-service animals such as household pets. The law should include specific provisions that hold dog owners accountable for the actions of their pets, especially in cases of assault towards other animals, and should mandate fines, vet bill compensation, and penalties for owning dangerous dogs.
Our goal is simple but profound: pets need the protection of the law. By amending the current Dangerous Dogs Act, we can deter negligence and cruelty, and ensure a safer environment for our furry family members. Revisiting and revising this legislation would promote responsible pet ownership, encourage preventive measures, and give everyone peace of mind.
Please join us in calling for an amendment to the Dangerous Dogs Act to include protections for non-service animals from dogs dangerously out of control. Sign this petition to voice your support in safeguarding our cherished pets from preventable harm.
