The Issue

Last year, I lost my beautiful black cat after a tragic dog attack. The sorrow of that loss is ever-present with me, and it was deepened each time I found other cats hit by cars, left alone and hurt on the roads. Several instances, I discovered cats that had been hit by cars and left utterly disregarded, compelled me to stop, wrap them gently in a towel, and take them to a veterinarian. Even in their silent suffering, there was some small comfort in ensuring their owners could find closure.

It is distressing to think of any poor furbaby left injured on the road, their helplessness magnified by humanity’s inaction. A cat has feelings too and deserves dignity and respect in their moments of need. The law needs changing to enforce responsibility and compassion when a situation arises where a cat is inadvertently injured by a vehicle.

In the UK alone, it is estimated that approximately 230,000 cats are hit by vehicles annually. The RSPCA statistics reveal that only one in ten of these cats will receive the necessary help or attention they so desperately need. These figures illustrate a heartbreaking scenario where countless cats die needlessly because drivers fail to act responsibly.

This petition seeks to advocate for a change in law requiring drivers to assist injured cats they hit or find on the road. This could mean safely helping move the cat to the roadside, contacting local animal welfare organisations, or taking it directly to a veterinarian. Instituting this legal responsibility would not only reduce unnecessary suffering but also potentially save the lives of these beloved animals.

Creating and enforcing such a law would foster a community where empathy and responsibility are prioritized. It would affirm the value we place on animal lives and our willingness to act as protectors rather than passive observers to their suffering.

I urge you to support this change and bring relief to the lives of our furry companions and peace of mind to their owners. Sign this petition and stand with me to make sure that no cat suffers unattended on our roads again.
