The Issue

In the past two years, I have experienced the heartbreak of losing not one, but two beloved cats to hit-and-run incidents. Each time, the driver drove off, leaving my pets to suffer their final moments by the roadside. This was not just a personal loss but a painful reminder of a significant gap in our legal system.

In the UK, current road traffic laws require drivers to report accidents involving dogs, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys, and mules, but frustratingly, not cats. Despite cats being one of the most popular pets in the country, they are not afforded the same legal protection. According to Cats Protection, over 230,000 cats are run over each year, highlighting the urgent need for legislative change.

This petition seeks to amend the existing road traffic laws to include cats. By doing so, we can ensure that all animal accidents are reported, allowing owners to at least have the chance of closure, and injured cats to receive medical attention more quickly. This change would also encourage more responsible driving, knowing there are penalties for failing to report accidents involving cats.

It's time we recognize the importance of cats in our families and communities by giving them the legal recognition they deserve on our roads. Please stand with us in addressing this oversight in our laws, and help prevent other pet owners from experiencing the same heartache. By signing this petition, you are supporting a call for compassion, responsibility, and change.
