Change. The immediate licence revocation law for Drink and Drug driving offences

Change. The immediate licence revocation law for Drink and Drug driving offences
The Issue
On the 20th of December, our beloved son, brother, partner, and friend was tragically killed by a driver who was allegedly significantly over the legal limits for both alcohol and drugs. This senseless tragedy has devastated our family and underscored a grave flaw within our current legal system concerning drink and drug driving offences.
The driver in question had been found to have probably been the driver of a car in September 2025 whilst allegedly again over the limit for both drink and drugs, but had been released with his licence intact pending a court appearance. This was not the first time this driver had been stopped and he was well known to the authorities for similar offences.
Currently, when someone is stopped and found to be over the legal drink or drug driving limit, their licence is not revoked immediately. This allows offenders to continue driving until they face a court hearing, which can take several weeks or even months. This gap in enforcement poses significant risks to public safety, as individuals who have already demonstrated a willingness to break the law are left unchecked on our roads.
Immediate revocation of driving licences when caught over the limit is not only a logical step but a necessary one. Statistics show that drivers over the legal limit are exponentially more likely to cause accidents, putting countless innocent lives at risk every day. For instance, according to the [Department for Transport](https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-transport drivers over the legal alcohol limit are involved in approximately 6,480 road accidents annually in the UK alone. A significant number of these could be prevented with more immediate and stringent enforcement measures.
It is imperative that we advocate for change, to safeguard our communities from further heartbreak and to prevent other families from experiencing the profound sorrow we are enduring. We propose that legislation be amended to ensure that any driver found to be above the legal alcohol or drug limit has their driving licence revoked on the spot. This reform would not only deter individuals from risking driving under the influence but also remove immediate threats from our roads.
We urge lawmakers to recognise the urgency of this issue and to act swiftly to protect the lives of innocent road users. No family should have to suffer the pain and loss that we have endured. With your support, we can push for this critical change to our driving laws.
Please sign this petition to demand immediate licence revocation for those caught driving over the drink or drug limits and help us create safer roads for everyone.
