Crusoe Energy is named after the main character in Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe (Crusoe).  What reason would anyone have for using such a name?  White privilege?  Ignorance? Regardless of the reason, its use is reprehensible.  Crusoe is a slave trader/owner and colonialist who enslaved the indigenous people he encountered, forcing them to work their land that he appropriated to build wealth. Defoe romanticizes European colonialism by framing Crusoe as a god or savior to the "savages" he encounters on his journeys when he is quite frankly the antithesis.

Crusoe Energy fancies itself a high-quality investment with strong Environmental-Social-Governance (ESG) values, a vehicle they have employed to raise over $700 million.  While they may clear the environmental hurdles of ESG, they fail spectacularly at both Social and Governance. Crusoe Energy's leadership team and investors should be ashamed of promoting an offensive company name at trade shows and in the media. Robinson Crusoe is a relic from a dark historical period that still inflicts pain on significant portions of the world's population.  It is time to change.

Please join our effort by signing our petition to persuade the founders, leadership, employees, and investors of Crusoe Energy to change their hurtful name, a name with undertones of racial injustice and white supremacy. Renaming the company aligns with Crusoe Energy's stated values (be and become your best self), and is the most socially responsible action it could take to meet its ESG ambitions.  We all benefit by ending the glorification of a character who deserves to be ostracized, and Crusoe Energy will also benefit from a more inclusive rebranding.
