Change the hospitality hiring practices in Edinburgh

Change the hospitality hiring practices in Edinburgh
The Issue
Working in the hospitality industry in Edinburgh has become incredibly challenging, especially for young adults in the job market. The hospitality sector is a vibrant part of Edinburgh's economy, yet it faces serious issues due to current hiring practices.
Recently, there has been a noticeable trend of employers choosing to hire underage individuals. This trend is primarily driven by the new minimum wage regulations, which make it more cost-effective for businesses to employ younger workers. These regulations, though well-intentioned, have inadvertently made it harder for those over the age of 18 to find employment in hospitality, leaving many struggling to secure jobs and sustain themselves financially.
I was fired from Edinburgh street food in january of 2025 they claimed "It was to quiet" yet they have over 70 staff on floor and bar and they could have chose one of them.
This issue isn't just personal for me; it's an alarming reality for many young adults in Edinburgh who are ready and willing to work but find themselves overlooked in favor of cheaper labor. The pressure of finding reliable and fair employment opportunities is immense, and it's crucial that steps are taken to rectify this imbalance.
I propose that the local government and hospitality businesses in Edinburgh work together to create more equitable hiring practices. Possible solutions could include the implementation of incentives for businesses that hire employees above 18 or offering career development programs tailored for young adults in this sector.
By signing this petition, you are calling for local authorities and industry leaders to recognize and address this pressing issue. Together, we can advocate for fair and just employment opportunities in Edinburgh's hospitality industry, ensuring that it can thrive while supporting all seeking employment. Let's work towards a more inclusive and balanced workforce. Please sign this petition today to help bring about necessary change.
