The Issue

As a Christian, I find it deeply unsettling to support a school mascot that conflicts with my values and beliefs. The current mascot for Dongola, Illinois School, the "Demons," and its corresponding "Girl Devils" are emblematic of themes that I find hard to reconcile with a nurturing, positive educational environment for our children.

When I shout out in support of our school, I want to do so with pride and sincerity, without feeling a compromise to my faith or the nurturing environment I strive to instill in my children. The imagery associated with demons and devils on school attire only deepens this discomfort, as it projects an image that many parents, like myself, find inappropriate for our young learners.

In considering a change, it's crucial to recognize the impact that school symbols have on shaping student identity and community perception. Many successful institutions across the nation have adopted mascots that embody positive values such as courage, kindness, and perseverance. Examples include mascots like the Eagles, the Lions, or the Tigers, each representing noble qualities without alienating or discomforting portions of their community.

By replacing our current mascots with ones that reflect universally accepted virtues, we can unite our diverse community and uphold values that nurture both educational excellence and moral integrity. Moreover, alternative mascots that emphasize inclusivity and strength provide an opportunity for rebranding that can inspire students while respecting the broader community's values.

We can collectively transform this situation into an opportunity to foster a united and uplifting school spirit. Let's urge the school board and administration to review and redesign the mascot and attire choices, focusing on symbols that every member of our community can proudly embrace.

Please sign this petition to support the change of the Dongola Illinois School mascot from "Demons" and "Girl Devils" to something that reflects the shared values and principles important to both our children and our community at large. Let’s create an educational environment where all students and families feel proud and looked after.
