As a queer person who spent most of my life in the Sacramento area, I always want to participate in all things queer for my community. However, the last few years of attending to try to support local businesses and performers has been more than challenging due to the oppressive heat we experience in here in June. 

Within the LGBTQ+ community there is a large number of disabled folks who have severe reactions to the heat, or even meds that make it impossible to be outside in this weather. Overall, though the heat leads to sun poisoning for even the most able bodied folks.

This type of heat isn't just uncomfortable, but it's dangerous. These extreme temperatures can exacerbate symptoms like dizziness, dehydration, overheating, and more. The risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke is very real, especially for those of us who are more vulnerable.

Events like Pride should be accessible and welcoming to all, reflecting the diverse community it celebrates. However, in its current form, Sacramento Pride unintentionally excludes members of our community due to the timing and location of the event. By moving Sacramento Pride to a cooler month, such as October, or hosting it in an indoor venue like the Convention Center, there can be a safer and more inclusive event for all!

I posted about this on threads and had hundreds of reactions and responses from the community calling for change! We’ve even heard of other cities that have successfully adjusted their Pride events to better accommodate their climates, ensuring everyone can participate without fearing for their health.

At the 2025 Sac Pride I had recently been diagnosed with POTS and ended up fainting while in the shade waiting for the burlesque performers to start (I had a friend performing and wanted to support her show even in the heat). Luckily a security guard kept me from getting hurt and got me to the VIP section to sit. A friend had to go purchase ice and water for me as there weren’t many options. The med team was around, but I didn’t waste my time because I do carry all my own meds and items I usually need. But the heat was just too overwhelming. I watched my friend perform and instantly left the festival. 

We urge the organizers of Sacramento Pride to consider these changes to allow everyone, regardless of physical ability or health, to safely participate in such a major annual event for the community.
