Change the 5-day school week to a 4-day school week at Penn Manor High School

The Issue

School can be overwhelming, and I believe I speak for all students when I say that it is exhausting. The current five-day school week at Penn Manor High School not only drains our energy but also impacts our mental well-being. I propose, based on Act 56, that we transition to a four-day school week. This change holds the potential not only to improve students' mental health but also to increase their motivation and academic performance.

Because of Act 56, signed into law in 2023, the state of PA allows schools to require a minimum of 990 hours of in-school learning. Many schools have reduced their weeks to 4-day weeks, some offering an optional 5th day for low academics or educational assistance. Penn Manor Highschool has a total of 180 days, and approximately 1,275 hours of in-school learning!

Implementing a four-day school week can save Penn Manor High School and the local community a significant amount of resources. According to studies, schools that have adopted a four-day week have seen a reduction in operational costs, including transportation and utility expenses. These savings can be redirected to improve educational program quality or invest in student services that enhance learning experiences. This all would not affect the length of summer.

Moreover, a shorter school week has proven benefits for students. Research indicates that four-day school weeks can lead to higher attendance rates and better student engagement. With an extra day to rest, pursue interests, or participate in family activities, students are more likely to feel refreshed and ready to engage in their studies, creating a more positive school atmosphere. Some studies indicate over a 30% reduction in bullying and over 20% reduction in physical altercations.

There is evidence from other districts that have implemented this schedule successfully, where students' academic performance has stabilized or even improved. By transitioning to a four-day week, Penn Manor High School can become a pioneer in Lancaster County, setting a precedent for innovative education that prioritizes mental health and optimized learning.
