My bond with them is deep, and being parted from them feels like losing a part of myself. It is heart-wrenching to face such a situation without any legal recourse or rights, forcing me to go to court against my own daughter, just to have the chance to see my beloved grandchildren.

This isn't just my story. There are countless others across the United States caught in the same struggle. Grandchildren and grandparents share a unique and irreplaceable bond. Studies have shown that regular interactions with grandparents can greatly benefit children's emotional and social development. Yet, due to current state laws that do not recognize this essential relationship, many grandparents are left powerless when family conflicts arise, causing heartache for both the elders and the young ones caught in between.

In states without clear grandparents' visitation rights, such bonds can be severed without cause, leaving families broken. According to a 2019 survey by the AARP, over 10% of grandparents in America serve as primary caregivers to their grandchildren at some point in their lives, and yet, they have little to no legal rights to maintain contact if a parent decides to restrict access.

We urgently need legislative reform to protect this sacred relationship. Each state should establish comprehensive laws granting grandparents the right to petition for visitation rights based on the best interests of the child. Legislators need to recognize the profound impact of these connections and address the inconsistencies in legal protection across the nation.
