The Issue

On Saturday 18th October, a grieving family in Nepal, lost 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in a fatal hit-and-run accident on Redbridge Lane East. The victim being an innocent pedestrian serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the urgent need for effective deterrents.

Redbridge Lane East is frequented by many pedestrians, including children and families who attend schools nearby and commuters using the tube station. Despite this, many reckless drivers, often unfamiliar with the area, will drive at reckless speeds through the wide road after leaving the roundabout - often in exotic cars with loud exhausts. This behaviour is not only arrogant and insulting to the residents and families living along the road, but possess a significant danger to them.

Our community cannot endure more loss due to preventable traffic incidents. To address this issue immediately, we propose lowering the speed limit on Redbridge Lane East to 20 miles per hour. Additionally, installing speed cameras throughout the stretch is essential to ensure adherence to this new limit.

The introduction of a 20 mph speed limit, accompanied by speed cameras, will significantly deter speeding, thus increasing the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users. According to statistics from authoritative road safety organisations, roads with a 20 mph speed limit see a reduction in accidents by around 40%, making them notably safer for everyone.

Implementing these changes aligns with broader urban safety initiatives supported by communities across the UK. Places that have adopted such measures report not only fewer traffic casualties but also enhanced quality of life as pedestrian and cyclist activity increases.

We urge local authorities to take this critical step towards safeguarding our community. Let us ensure that Yubin's tragic death leads to positive change and increased safety for everyone.

Please sign this petition to demand immediate action for safer roads and a proactive approach to preventing further tragedies.
