Change South Carolina law to require trailer registration
Change South Carolina law to require trailer registration
The Issue
I was driving down the highway when something chaotic happened: a tire came off a trailer and bounced down the road, hitting my car. The driver just kept going, unaware of the damage caused, and due to the high barrels stacked on the trailer, I couldn't even identify the truck since there was no license plate on the trailer. Another time, a wheelbarrow fell off a trailer on the highway, and I narrowly avoided a crash. These experiences have highlighted a serious problem in South Carolina.
Currently, trailers in South Carolina aren’t required to be registered or have a license plate. This lack of regulation poses a significant risk to all drivers and hinders accountability. Trailers, irrespective of their size or load, can become potential hazards on the road for everyone. Without proper identification like a license plate, holding irresponsible drivers accountable becomes nearly impossible.
Neighboring states including North Carolina and Georgia require trailer registration, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring accountability. The lack of similar legislation in South Carolina leaves our citizens at risk. By mandating trailer registration and license plates, attachable to a national database, we can track and monitor trailers, which could promote safer behaviors among drivers towing these vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were over 8,000 injury crashes involving trailers in 2020 alone. Knowing this, it’s crucial for South Carolina to take action to prevent avoidable accidents.
Implementing this change isn't just a matter of filling out paperwork. It's about safeguarding our highways, ensuring public safety, and making sure that every driver shares responsibility on the road. It is time for our lawmakers in South Carolina to take action and require trailers to be registered and fitted with license plates.
Please sign this petition to push our local legislators to make this vital safety change. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
