Change South Carolina High School math requirements

The Issue

Drawing from my personal experience as a parent, I, alongside my two sons, consistently struggled with math subjects like algebra, a story familiar to many parents and students across the educational landscape in South Carolina. Yet, we excelled in language arts, history, and other subjects of passion. Sadly, the stringent math requirements in our education system pose a challenge to many excellent students who could otherwise shine brilliantly in their areas of interest.

According to the Pew Research Center, up to 47% of students struggle with math and it becomes an obstacle to their successful graduation. This system has the unintended consequence of placing undue stress and frustration on the learners leading to lower self-confidence and even dropouts.

By making algebra and other challenging mathematical subjects optional, we can forge a more all encompassing educational system that caters to a multitude of talents and interests. We propose that if the subjects, such as algebra, are not part of a student's career path, these shouldn't be requirements to obtain a high school degree. A revised policy would help empower students to choose subjects aligned with their career aspirations and proficiencies, thereby promoting a more balanced and interest-based learning environment.

We urge South Carolina Department of Education to reconsider the current policy on mathematics as mandatory course requirements and to take an informed decision keeping in mind the best interests of our students. Please, sign this petition to promote well rounded education based on individual career paths for all students.
