The Issue

Schools in Canandaigua City need to adapt their start times to better meet the needs of students and families. Studies have shown that later school start times improve student performance, reduce absenteeism, and enhance overall well-being. Currently, many schools in the Canandaigua City School District begin classes as early as 7:30 AM, often forcing students to wake as early as 6:00 AM to prepare and commute.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 AM to align with adolescents' natural sleep cycles. Teens are biologically programmed to sleep and wake later, making early start times a significant source of sleep deprivation. According to a 2020 CDC report, over 70% of U.S. high school students do not get the recommended amount of sleep, which is linked to issues such as poor academic performance, obesity, depression, and increased risk of accidents.

Canandaigua City Schools have the opportunity to be leaders in this change and protect the health and future of their students by reconsidering their start times. Implementing a start time of 8:30 AM or later would promote better sleep and lead to more attentive and healthier students. Additionally, this adjustment may result in improved test scores and lower rates of tardiness and dropouts.

We urge the Canandaigua City School Board to take into consideration the substantial benefits of adjusting school start times. By doing so, they will not only be enhancing the lives of thousands of students but also setting a precedent that other districts can follow. Your signature on this petition can help drive this necessary change for a better educational environment for our children. Please join us in supporting this initiative to prioritize the health and education of our students. Sign this petition and help us make a meaningful difference! A meeting will be held on March 4th to discuss this movement with the School Board.
