Change School Start One Hour Later to Tackle Sleep Deprivation

The Issue

I'm a student who has seen the debilitating effects of sleep deprivation among my peers and our dedicated school staff. Through numerous conversations and personal experiences, it's become clear to me that this is not just an isolated issue but a widespread problem in our school and, indeed, in many high schools across the country.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends teenagers get between 9 and 10 hours of sleep per night to function best ("School Start Times for Adolescents", 2014). However, the reality is far from this, with most students struggling to get even 6 hours of sleep, according to a study by the National Sleep Foundation. Starting school later can aid in bridging this sleep gap, thereby improving the health and academic performances of students.

Moreover, delayed start times are not only beneficial for students, but also for our dedicated school staff who also experience fatigue from early school starts. A rested staff results in increased productivity and improved teaching quality, directly benefiting the students.

As members of our school and wider community, let's propose a school start time that's one hour later. Not only does this align with scientific recommendations, but it also caters to the very real experiences of sleep deprivation we're all too familiar with. Change starts with us. Sign this petition and help make our school a healthier, more conducive environment for learning.
