Change Requirements For Student Cell-Phone Ban
The Issue
We, the students and parents of the Middlesex County Magnet Schools are dissatisfied with the decisions of our Administrators and the proposed Cell-Phone Ban using Doorman, and respectfully request the School Board/Administration to reconsider and revise this policy.
We do acknowledge the school's intention to create a better, more focused learning environment for students, however using Doorman to accomplish this may prove the exact opposite.
Our concerns with Doorman(and this policy) include:
- Stolen Personal Information
- Alignment/Data-Sharing with the U.S./Israeli Military
- Extreme Vagueness in Policies
- Contradicting Policies
- Lack Of Information About The Company
- Battery Draining
- Constant Surveillance
- Inability To Contact Family(especially in Emergencies)
- Increased Stress Due To Lack Of Solace(Music/White Noise/Etc.)
- And So On...
We respectfully request that our School Board:
- Eliminates the requirement to download/use Doorman on personal devices
- Establishes a far less intrusive Cell Phone Policy
- Publishes a new "MCMS Electronic Device Policy" on Genesis to confirm these changes
- Give Students/Parents a voice in any future decisions that may impact them directly
We believe that the best solution would be to require all students to keep their phones silent/off in their bags/lockers at all times, with the obvious exception of an emergency(whether it be medical, a drill, or otherwise).
This revised policy has already been implemented in Spotswood High School due to student backlash, and also complies with the law (P.L. 2025, c. 195).

Thank You For Your Time.
