Change Remediation Policy at Panther Creek

The Issue

As a student at Panther Creek High School, in Cary, NC, USA, I believe it is crucial for us to have the opportunity to remediate any score we receive on assessments, rather than being limited to only improving scores below 70. Furthermore, I propose that all students, to an extent, should be allowed to remediate their scores even if it is higher than a 70, and their final grade should be an average of their initial grade and the one received on the remediation.

After recently taking a test at school, I realized that many students do not take the time to thoroughly review and understand their mistakes since remediation is no longer offered. Therefore, they have no motivation to look over their mistakes. This lack of engagement with our errors hinders our learning potential and prevents us from learning important concepts.

I strongly believe that allowing students to remediate scores above a 70, will motivate us to address our weaknesses and enhance our understanding of the subject matter. This approach will not only result in higher grades but also promote a deeper level of understanding.

It is also unfair how students a few grade level above were able to use the cushion of remediation access to lessen the blows of their grades. Even though they are only a few grade levels above us they were able to remediate any score. Currently I’m a junior, and junior year is the hardest year. Last years juniors where given the opportunity to remediate anything which tremendously benefited them. We just ask for that same ability.

Supporting Facts:
1. Improved Retention: When students are given opportunities for remediation or retesting, they exhibit better long-term retention of material

2. Increased Motivation: Allowing remediation encourages students' intrinsic motivation by providing them with a chance for mastery over time.

3. Positive Impact on Graduation Rates: Schools with flexible grading policies most likely have higher graduation rates due to increased student engagement and reduced failing rates

I insist that Panther Creek High School administration, teachers, parents, and fellow students support this petition. Together, we can go back to a fairer remediation policy that promotes learning, growth, and success. It does not even have to be the same as last year, we can come to a compromise. But we just hope that the administration will hear our side and let us have a say in school policies, since this is our education.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and share this petition to as much people as you can

Sincerely,

Kriti Pokhrel
