The Cultural and Arts sector is a significant contributor to the U.S. and Global economies. Adding a whopping $1.2 trillion annually to the U.S. alone. We have an additional $1.8 trillion in spending power. Despite this immense contribution, "Black Americans" often find ourselves left out of the equation when it comes to receiving due credit and compensation for our creative and cultural contributions. This is largely due to ambiguities within the current racial categories on the U.S. Census.

Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau, Federal and State agencies categorize "Black or African American" as one of its race classifications. However, these designations do not accurately reflect the true identity and contributions of this group. It falsely includes "Black identifying" immigrant populations which also furthers the narrative that "immigrants built America." This grossly disregards the work ethic, inventions and actual blood of our ancestors who spoke of being from no other place, but America. With historical documents pre-dating the actual formation of The United States. We are the first to fight in its wars and the LAST to be acknowledged for centuries.

In light of H.R.1 being written into law and considering recent remarks from the President indicating that "Black Americans" are the only constitutionally protected group of "Birthright Citizens," it is imperative to make a change.

I propose that the U.S. Census race category "Black or African American" be revised to read "American." This new "American" category would describe "People or Birthright Citizens with origins in any of the original Colored Peoples or Indian tribes of the Contiguous North America." This change would not only provide clarity, but also honor the foundation laid by those who were cultural and physical builders of North America. All Federal and State agencies should adopt this standard.

All other "Black" races should be included under "other."

Additionally, the category "American Indian and Alaskan Native" should be updated to "Native American." The description for this should include "People with migrational origins in any of the original Alaskan or Asian tribes or citizens of Federally Recognized tribes."

Updating these categories on the U.S. Census and throughout each State is a necessary step in acknowledging and respecting the true heritage of our nation’s people. It would eliminate the "grey areas" that often lead to cultural appropriation and inaccurate representation. By doing so, we not only give credit where it is due but also honor the cultural fabric that our ancestors laid which significantly shaped the United States and the World at large.

Join me in advocating for this vital change. Sign this petition to call on the U.S. Census Bureau and government agencies on both the Federal and State levels to make these changes a reality.
