I currently work as a government affiliate for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and like many others, I face a significant financial burden due to the recent government shutdown. Despite dedicating myself to public service, I will not receive any remuneration for the time lost during this period of governmental inactivity. This is not just a personal issue; it's a systemic problem affecting thousands of government affiliates and contractors across the United States, who find themselves in a precarious financial situation post-shutdown.

Government shutdowns have become all too common, and each time, they leave hardworking individuals in limbo—sacrificing their time, efforts, and income during these disruptions. While federal employees often receive back pay once a shutdown ends, government affiliates and contractors are left out in the cold, unable to recover the financial stability they sacrifice for the greater good. This inequitable policy not only demoralizes workers but also increases financial insecurity among those who support critical government functions.

We are calling for a change in federal policy to ensure that all government affiliates and contractors are guaranteed back pay following any government shutdown. This change is not only fair but necessary to maintain an efficient and motivated workforce. Legislation should be proposed to ensure that those supporting our government's operations are treated equitably and with the respect they deserve.

According to the Congressional Research Service, since the fiscal year 1981, there have been 21 gaps in federal funding. Each gap represents a period where affiliated workers faced uncertainty and potential financial strain. Lawmakers must recognize the importance of every worker's contribution and provide them with the financial security they require to continue performing their job effectively.
