Change the PHS Math Grading System

The Issue

EDIT: PLEASE CHECK UPDATE!!

This petition is for the school board and math directors to rethink and change the grading system this year. The Princeton High School Math Department has changed the grading system this year to a weighing scale of 85% tests and 15% homework/classwork, which is causing a very negative effect on our grades. If a student does poorly or even gets below an A, that grade is predominantly that students quarter grade, and this system is causing not just stress to students, but anxiety over tests, which is making people perform worse.

Homework, classwork, projects, etc. should help your grades, and from talking to other students at PHS, that is not the case. The grading system is almost completely test based, and is stressing out every student who is taking a math class (a majority of our student body), and is leaving very little room for improvement if you have one bad test. We are not asking for an unreasonable new grading system, but if it could go back to how it was last year, I can speak on behalf of PHS students and parents and say we would be grateful. Last year, the system was 55% Tests, 20% Do, 15% Confer, and 10% Watch. By stretching out the weight of assignments, students have a more balanced grade and it actually helps students learn and perform better; motivating people to do their homework as it will affect their grade more than a mere 15%. By changing to this system, students won't feel as much pressure and won't have immense panic over one "not great" test. We need to change this NOW, before the 1st quarter ends so that everyone's grades can have a positive response, which 99% of grades will. I speak on behalf of PHS students who are asking the board to not just help us with our grades, but on our mental health, as tests being the only dominant grade is causing stress, test anxiety, and pressure to perform well under these unfair guidelines. Thank you.
