Change Needed: Ms. Baird & Ms. Trotochaud’s Poor Teaching

The Issue

Petition for Improved Teaching Standards in Advanced Algebra 2

To: PWCS School board

From: Concerned Students of Advanced Algebra 2

Subject: Request for Review of Teaching Methods by Ms. Brainne Trotochaud & Ms. Cynthia Baird

We, the undersigned students of Advanced Algebra 2, are submitting this petition to formally request an investigation into the teaching methods of Ms. Brainne Trotochaud and Ms. Cynthia Baird. Since the beginning of the school year, students in this class have faced significant challenges due to a lack of structured instruction, unfair testing practices, and insufficient academic support. These issues have negatively impacted our learning experience, academic performance, and overall confidence in the subject.

Concerns Regarding Teaching Methods

1. Minimal Direct Instruction

The class primarily consists of students receiving packets at the beginning of each unit without any direct teaching. The expectation is for students to teach themselves the material, which is an unreasonable approach for a challenging subject like Advanced Algebra 2. There is little to no lecturing, explanations, or guided problem-solving, making it difficult for students to grasp complex concepts.

2. Unfair and Unclear Testing Practices

Tests frequently include questions that can only be found in the packets, many of which are never properly explained or reviewed. This creates an unfair testing environment where students are assessed on material they have not been adequately taught. As a result, test scores do not accurately reflect students’ understanding or efforts, but rather their ability to navigate self-learning without guidance.

3. Lack of Clear Support and Explanation

While teachers offer individual assistance upon request, their explanations are often unclear, leaving students just as confused. Instead of providing structured lessons for the whole class, students must struggle through the material on their own, leading to frustration and declining academic performance. Many students are left feeling lost and unsupported, unable to find the help they need.

4. Disregard for Student Performance

Poor test grades are largely ignored, and there is little effort from the teachers to offer improvement opportunities. Instead of addressing the widespread difficulties students face, there is no intervention, no review of challenging topics, and no structured guidance to help students succeed. This approach is unfair and discouraging for students who are genuinely trying to do well in the class.

Request for Administrative Action

As students, we believe that math courses, particularly at the advanced level, should involve direct instruction, clear explanations, and fair assessment methods. The current structure of Advanced Algebra 2 fails to meet these basic expectations. Therefore, we respectfully request the following actions from the administration:

Conduct a formal review of the teaching methods used in this class.

Require structured lessons that involve actual instruction before students are expected to complete assignments or take assessments.

Implement fairer testing policies to ensure students are being evaluated on material that has been properly taught.

Provide additional academic resources and structured support to help students succeed.

This issue affects many students, and we urge the administration to take immediate action to ensure that all students receive the education they deserve. We appreciate your time and consideration of our concerns.

Sincerely,
student
