The Issue

Getting enough sleep during the school week is crucial for students' well-being and academic performance. Unfortunately, the current start time for Montgomery County Public High Schools at 7:45 am makes it challenging for many students, including myself and those I know, to achieve this.

Research consistently shows that adolescents need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night for optimal health, mood, and cognitive functioning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), starting schools later in the morning can help teenagers get the sleep they need. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 am to align with the natural sleep cycles of adolescents.

The current schedule not only affects students' sleep but also their ability to focus, participate in class, and excel academically. Tired students are more likely to experience stress, depression, and lower academic achievement. We believe that a small adjustment of 30 minutes or more could provide significant benefits in terms of students’ health, safety, and performance.

Parents and educators who have experienced later school start times have reported improvements in students' moods, decreased tardiness, and better overall attendance rates. By changing the start time to 8:15 am or later, Montgomery County Public Schools can become a leader in promoting student health and educational success.

Please sign this petition to help us advocate for this important change. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of students across our community by ensuring they have the time they need to rest and recharge before each school day.
