Change 'may' to 'must' for NACC public hearings

Change 'may' to 'must' for NACC public hearings
The issue
Transparency is the key to combat corruption, which is why it is critical for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to hold public hearings. No more secrets. Labor has not delivered on it's promise of a transparent and independent NACC.
Corruption thrives in the shadows, and only through an unwavering commitment to openness and accountability can we ensure that public officials remain answerable for their actions. When the law uses the word 'may' in relation to public hearings, it leaves room for discretion that can be abused, allowing proceedings to remain behind closed doors and away from the public eye.
Labor’s Powerful, Transparent and Independent National Anti-Corruption Commission (2021)
Public hearings are essential for maintaining democracy, fostering trust in government institutions, and empowering citizens with the information they need to hold leaders accountable. They provide a forum for evaluating the conduct of public officials and for the public to engage directly with matters that affect their lives. By changing the language from 'may' to 'must', the NACC would be legally obliged to conduct all their hearings in the public domain, ensuring transparency is not just an option, but a requirement.
Countries with strong anti-corruption frameworks have demonstrated significant improvements in public trust when there is a mandate for public accountability. For example, nations that enforce mandatory public hearings as part of their legislative oversight processes tend to score higher on international transparency indexes. Citizens are entitled to more than just rhetoric; they require verifiable actions and processes that preclude the misuse of power.
All it will take is changing 1 single simple word.
Join us in demanding that the government amend the relevant legislation to ensure the words 'may hold public hearings' are replaced with 'must hold public hearings'. This imperative change will not only strengthen our nation's integrity but will also encourage all stakeholders to engage constructively in the fight against corruption. Sign this petition to insist on a transparent system that does not hide its processes, but rather, embraces public scrutiny and accountability.
