The Issue

Living with ADHD as an adult on the Isle of Man is challenging, and I know this all too well because I suffer from ADHD. Many of my friends also share this condition, and the struggles we face are compounded by the current policies of Manx Care. At present, adults needing an ADHD assessment must resort to costly private diagnostics, as Manx Care doesn't offer these assessments through the NHS. This approach not only adds a financial burden but also creates significant barriers to receiving timely and necessary medical care.

ADHD is a recognized neurodevelopmental disorder that affects one's ability to focus, control impulses, and manage behavior. It's crucial that individuals have access to appropriate assessments and treatment options through public health systems like Manx Care. The lack of NHS coverage for ADHD assessments is not just an inconvenience; it is a deep-rooted issue that leads to untreated mental health conditions, causing further societal and economic challenges.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), early diagnosis and intervention in ADHD can significantly improve quality of life, educational outcomes, and employment retention. Without access to assessments, many adults remain undiagnosed, struggling to function in daily life, which can lead to a ripple effect impacting their families, workplaces, and society as a whole.

Introducing NHS-funded ADHD assessments for adults within Manx Care is a necessary and responsible step forward. It would give access to essential healthcare, ensuring that all residents, regardless of their financial status, can receive accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment.

Let's encourage Manx Care to revise their policy and provide adults with access to ADHD assessments through the NHS. Sign this petition to help us bring about this much-needed change for our community and ensure that health care is accessible to all, not just those who can afford it.
