Change Manhattan's laws to decriminalize cannabis

Change Manhattan's laws to decriminalize cannabis
The Issue
While the surrounding states have moved forward and legalized cannabis, Kansas, continues to lag in the past. The citizens of Manhattan have suffered for too long due to outdated laws making the possession of cannabis illegal. It's high time our city aligns itself with the modern standards of justice and medicinal accessibility previously adopted by our neighboring states.
In Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, cannabis has been legalized in various forms, allowing countless residents access to its medical benefits, decreasing unnecessary criminal charges against responsible adults, and the growth of state economies from sales tax on cannabis products. Kansas is one of the few states holding stringent cannabis policies, and it's time to change that, starting with Manhattan.
The criminalization of cannabis possession burdens our legal system, takes up valuable resources, and leads to unjust consequences for individuals pursuing alternative medication or relaxation methods. It often targets marginalized communities disproportionately, thus perpetuating cycles of inequality and injustice.
Decriminalizing cannabis in Manhattan doesn't mean promoting its uncontrolled use, but opening the door to a larger conversation about the the want of the state at large to move forward with cannabis legalization whether that be medicinal and/or recreational adult use despite the hampering of our state legislature.
It's essential to foster a community that understands and supports the responsible use of cannabis, acknowledging that many individuals rely on it for legitimate therapeutic purposes. Research shows that cannabis has been instrumental in managing pain, reducing anxiety, and alleviating symptoms of chronic illnesses such as epilepsy, thereby improving the quality of life for numerous patients (Source: National Institutes of Health).
Therefore, we urge the city council members of Manhattan, KS, to reconsider the current stance on cannabis (City Ordinance Sec.22-91) and join in creating a fairer, more progressive community. Your support for this petition will contribute to shaping a city that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and just. Please sign this petition to demand the change we need now.
